Ive always been curious about joe madd's shadow work it looks like he doesnt ink his work but leaves it as a penciled in effect, which i really love. How exactly can you do that digitally??

i spent countless hours playing with the automatic selection tool as my project has a lot of motion blur and noise to add effects to the design and couldn't figure this out. this has given me the most amazing amount of relief thank you so much!

thanks for the vid, i’m planning on getting back to being a flatter this is a good refresher for me. I used to flat for a studio where i did my internship. I did the flats for Street Clothes by Travis Holyfield and some Marvel and GI Joe comics mostly by either Harvey Tolibao or Von Randal.

Every time I try to paste the image into the layer mask it just pastes to a new layer even though I have the layer mask selected. Any tips for this?

Typically this is all done first and merged together into the lineart for me. Make sure you clip the levels adjustment to the line art if you don't want it affecting the rest of the color layers as well! It's the little double square icon above the layers. Sorry I forgot to show that!

Oh man i didnt see this video until now! Im going to turn on notifications from now on. I love your teaching style and your courses. You have made a big difference to me as an artist even though i dont make comics. Thank you for all your hard work. That part about it being okay to change directions and for it to be okay not to have a plan right now really hit home. I am coming out the other side of burnout and dont really know where i will head yet. All those marketing gurus tell us we need plans and i felt guilty for not having one already. I’m having an issue with this technique where in the end result the black is actually really really dark transparent gray and the white is real really faint transparent gray. This becomes an issue when trying to fill the lines to color because procreate keeps trying to fill the entire “light gray” areas with the same color so it’s impossible to fill any area with a different color. I tried to work around this by “coloring inside the lines” in a different layer but because the coloring is not perfect, you can see the faint overlap of color behind the “dark gray” lines. Has anyone else ran into this problem or does anyone have any ideas of how to solve for it?
